Crisanto now has a 2-0 lead over Woods in ASP Australasia Pro Junior finals, with the flying Brazilian also edging out the Australian in last year’s final of the 2011 Burleigh Heads Pro Junior – Reinforcing a Crisanto-Woods rivalry, which could well and truly culminate on the elite ASP Men’s World Tour in years to come. In today’s final, Crisanto posted a heat total of 12.50 points, including a crucial 4.00 ride on his last wave to snatch victory from Woods (12.25) in the final minute of the heat.

Pipeline saw crazy-big tubes and once Pipe started washing through, the focus on Oahu shifted to Waimea and the outer reefs. Big wave charger Elliot Marshall jumped straight off the plane and got a pumping day at 10-12 ft Waimea straight off the bat, "The 9'6 felt unreal. Paddles amazing and still narrow so it can knife it's way in. Got a heap of compliments on the board and paddled in to the biggest wave i've had. haha stoked. Surfed pipe yesterday on the 6'6 and that felt really nice too. The 6'6 feels real good in the tube. And I'm super keen to try out the 6'3."

2011 Top 5 Joistik Surfboards Models

1. P1 (updated for 2012 new model The Protag)

The top selling board in Australia and the most popular competition board this year ordered by WCT, WQS and Pro Junior surfers was the P1 model. The P1 is an altered version of the X1 model to suit smaller waves. The rocker is slightly relaxed up front and adjusted in the back half to complement a smaller wave face, which together with tweaks to the rail line and an increase in concave depth, provides suitable drive, responsiveness and release in these conditions. One of it's greatest attributes is it's ability to handle such a wide range of conditions, which makes it a valuable addition to any surfer's quiver.

The P4 was a huge hit in Australia and Japan's best selling model. It is a fun everyday board that is ridden 4-6" shorter and a lot wider than your regular board. Instant speed off the mark as a result of the flatter rocker through the back and wide tail pod. The width creates greater planing area which together with the full rail and concaves give you ample lift and drive in weaker waves. The Vector model incorporates the 'Conza' bottom. In smaller and/or weaker conditions, it allows the wider board to loosen up in rail to rail transitions and also provide thrust.

3. The Exponent

The Exponent was a popular model that was included in all my team rider's quivers for comps. With good speed off the mark, explosive projection into airs and fin wafts and acceleration in and out of turns, the Exponent is perfect for modern high performance surfing. It's designed to be ridden in small to medium everyday surf and features a rocker that is more relaxed with a wider tail and a slight forward hip. It is a very versatile board that excels in all surf up to 4 feet.

4. FB2 (updated for 2012 new model the SuperScript)

The FB2 has become a favourite with surfers who just want to have fun, catch heaps of waves and make the most of the junk thats usually on offer at most beach breaks. It can surf through the flats in small junky waves but can crank it top to bottom in hollow waves too. With full rails, the round nose and broad outline that tapers into a sensitive round tail. Subtle concave blend into a vee off the back and provide speed and hold through your turns. Can be ridden as a quad or thruster.

5. The Algorithm

The Algorithm was one of the best selling models in Queensland and a favourite board for point breaks like Snapper and Burleigh Heads. It is a shorter board designed to be ridden in smaller everyday point and beach breaks. This is a dynamic and quick-response board that is lightning fast and instantly precise through carves, hacks and punts. The Algorithm has a fuller nose and tail outline than the Exponent and is noticeably straighter though the back half, leading into a pronounced hip and tight round pin. Once you get it up and going the board becomes incredibly lively and responsive and likes to be surfed with a direct and hard approach.

1. The Junk

The Junk is a small wave summer board for everyday junk! A clean flat entry rocker provides speed whilst the the a deep double concave throughout the board enable quick rail to rail transition. Coupled with the flat deck, low rail apex and flipped tail, the Junk has great responsive in smaller, weaker surf. A favorite groveler amongst the team, can be ridden a couple inches shorter than your normal board.

2. The Vector

The Superscipt is a complete all-rounder which excels in a variety of conditions under 6 foot. With full rails, the round nose and broad outline taper into a sensitive round tail. Subtle concave blend into a vee off the back and provide speed and hold through your turns. If the Subscript provides short-range top to bottom speed and maneuvrabilty in summer waves, the Superscript provide a longer range drive and acceleration. It can surf through the flats and in small junk but can crank it top to bottom in hollow waves too. Has to be ridden to be believed.

4. Subscript
A round nose, rail-to-rail funster, the SubScript is perfect for summer's small windblown waves. Single to deep double concave to accentuated vee off a wider tail block. Highly versatile in either a thruster or quad fin setup, these boards also perform surprisingly well in good waves. These are amazing small wave boards and addictive fun- ride 4-6" shorter and at least an inch wider.

Tasmania Win Their First Ever Aussie School Teams Title

Hamish Renwick and Kyle Cooper continued their winning run at the Australian Junior Surfing Titles with the pair making history by winning Tasmania’s first ever under 19 Boy’s Schools Surfing title at Park Beach, Coffs Harbour. In a nail biting final the boy’s held the lead throughout but were seriously challenged by Team Victoria late in the final and managed to hang on and win by just 0.6 of a point, the final score line being Tasmania 21.05 to Victoria 20.45. “ It’s so good to win this final – before we came here we were sort of confident that we could do it, we were both psyching each other up and we really focused on trying to win the thing and it’s paid off” said Renwick.
Hamish followed up the win by coming 5th in the Individual Under 18 event, finishing off a great season for him after claiming the Aussie Junior Longboard Title earlier in the year. Hamish rides a Joistik 6’1”x 18” 5/8” x 2” ¼” rounded square X5 model.
“Tasmania has become famous for surfing over the past 10 years due to the incredible waves we have, especially Shipstern’s and there’s a surge in talented surfers developing and we feel a part of that surge and it’s just awesome “added Renwick.

Swellnet's Wave of the day is Darmaputra Tonjo flying high on a Joistik. A virtual unknown before the recent World Pro Junior event in Bali. The 20-year-old Padma local won a wildcard spot into the contest by winning the local trials. Tonjo then defeated number two seed Nat Young (USA) in round 2, then advanced and defeated World Junior Champion Jack Freestone (AUS) in round 3. Tonjo and fellow local ripper Oney Anwar are at the forefront of the new wave of Indonesian Juniors who are capable of competing and winning on the global stage.

Perth got punished by this set after surviving his Round 1 heat at 10-12 foot Sunset.
Afterwards he was interviewed by the ASP and here's what he had to say about the experience:

“It’s a series of contests any pro surfer would love to win,” Standlick said. “The respect you instantly receive is immense, something you carry for life. This year Haleiwa was tiny, it didn’t feel like a typical Hawaiian contest. Although Sunset was been pretty big today, not too big, but big enough to be a little scary.”

Bondi isn’t typically known for its big surf, but Standlick say that when the surf gets to a certain size it doesn’t matter where you come from.

“As soon as it gets over 12 foot everyone in the event spare a small few get intimidated,” Standlick said. “Coming from Bondi does not make a difference, half of the craziest surfers in the world grew up surfing ordinary waves. I love coming to Hawaii, the more time you spend here the more comfortable you become.”

Currently ranked 115th (and climbing after advancing to the next round of the Vans World Cup of Surfing at Sunset today), Standlick is happy with his performance on his first year in the big leagues.

“The ASP Star and Prime series offers a much better lifestyle than chasing the Pro Junior Series,” Standlick said. “It’s so much more fun, you learn a lot about yourself and best of all you get to see so much more of the world.”

Thomas left for Hawaii yesterday with his new quiver after scoring extensive coverage and an epic video part in ASL's 280 Top 100 issue.
Here are a few of his new boards from top to bottom:

This past year his 5'10 Renegade has been his go to board for all conditions and throughout his winning Pro Junior Series run, but recently he has been tending towards favouring his Exponents, which I'm now running at 5'9" instead of 5'8 1/2".
The X1 is included in his North Shore quiver as a popular and trusted board for a host of good surf conditions whilst the Detonator has evolved from the X3 and features an updated outline and increased tail rocker- tested and perfected in Hawaii and Mentawais by teamriders such as Brent Savage, Sam Wrench and Serena Brooke.
His M1 Pipe curve board has been tested in gnarly conditions like huge Pipe and Chopes by our team riders Perth Standlick, James Woods, Shaun Gossmann and Japan's Keito Matsuoka, originally refined several years ago with then team rider and Pipe/Chopes charger Dean Morrison. Just moved into this sweet place on the headland between Curl Curl and Freshwater. Can check the surf at Freshwater every day from the balcony and in 1 minute be in the surf at Curly. Waves have been small so far but there's a pulse on the way. My new boards have just arrived down from the Glass Lab and the quality just keeps getting better and better. Kangaroo Island 6 star WQS

Heres a few new shots of Perth surfing his local Bondi as he warms up for the Kangaroo Island 6 star WQS which starts on Friday. We have been working on a new board together Perth has coined 'the Tink'. The Tinkerbell is a smaller cut down board for everyday surf, which is wider and features a narrower needle nose and a wide blunt tail pod.

The ASP Kangaroo Island Pro is the last of the star rated events before the Hawaiian season and is sure to attract some big names in the hunt for qualification points. Also competing are Joistik riders Brent Savage and Sam Wrench.

The Arnette World Junior presented by Quiksilver continued for the second consecutive day with clean one-to-three foot surf at Rio de Janeiro’s lefthand pointbreak of Arpoador to complete Round 2 of men’s competition. Tom Woods won his heat and advanced into the next round posting a 7.5 and 7.43 to convincingly defeat Chase Wilson. He will now surf against Keanu Asing from Hawaii in Round 3.

Surfing the Black and Caspian Sea....

Perth just dropped by to pick his new 10 board quiver for the Kangaroo island WQS and the upcoming Hawaii season. He has just returned from a long stint in Europe which culminated in filming for 'Surfing the Wild East' which is the worlds first surf movie funded by crowd funding. The film aims to give a small taste of surf conditions and culture encountered in the Black and Caspian seas. The 14-day trip filming the Wild East with Perth Standlick and Ian Walsh was a success in adventure, finding new surf and exploring foreign culture. The crew capture footage never seen in the surf world and show that with the right amount of wind, direction and timing, surfing the Black and Caspian seas is no problem. But that doesn't mean it's easy. The trick is to catch the right forecast, and get ready for a whole new style of surfing. Ever changing waves, short swell intervals, different water salinity and density -- even the pros were taken by surprise. Here's a few shots of the surf conditions found in Bulgaria, Turkey, and Azerbaijan. All photos by Jeff Flindt.

World Pro Junior Round 3

Tom Woods won a nail biting Round 2 heat in the last minute to secure a win against Hawaiian Keala Naihe. He then come up against another Joistik favourite Beyrick De Vries in Round 3. The pair put on an epic show in their clash, with long tubes and big airs being thrown down by both surfers. The lead changed multiple times, but ultimately it was De Vries who held the top spot when the final siren sounded, sending Woods, the 2011 ASP Australasian Pro Junior Series Champion home with an equal 17th place finish. “I know Thomas can do massive air-reverses whenever he wants, luckily I got two of the best waves of my trip so far and was able to beat him,” De Vries said. “Thomas got his best wave because of my mistake, but I got a second chance and got barreled.”

The World Pro Juniors starts in Bali on Monday. The ASP World Junior Championship Tour will kick off with the Oakley World Pro Junior, October 3-14, at Keramus with a back up venue of Canguu. This year a third event has been added in Brazil, which will further solidify one undisputed World Junior Champion for men and one for women. With a holding period of Oct. 3-14, the event will see the best juniors in the world compete from Australasia, South America, North America, Europe, Africa, Hawaii and Japan, as well as nine wildcards to round out the prestigious field. EPS Longboard

This week I've been busy finishing off all my EPS orders including this 9'0 x 21 1/2 x 2 5/16 longboard. Two popular longboard models I shape are the MOD and the GHT. The MOD is a high performance modern longboard whilst the GHT has the look and technical aspects of the MOD, but is specifically tailored towards nose-riding. The MOD has a few variations that I've dialed in for various riders over the years, customizing the design for different conditions, breaks and surfers.
With this particular custom board, I wanted to take the GHT model and try incorporate more elements of the MOD into it. As you can see I've also shaped the 'conza' bottom contour into the back third of the concave. I also aimed for a defined base to draw from on this board (a mix of the 2 models), but also the freedom to follow my eye and take some design lead on the spur of the moment, so this board is a combination of profiling techniques: a machine cut with the basics, further refined by hand planer. Still had to walk the yards on this one though, as you can see by the foam excess on the floor. Although the board is wafer thin for a longboard, it does feature a fuller rail, plus the rider is small and light-footed. So once combined with the EPS foam core and epoxy glass job, the buoyancy and lightness are going to work well for him. I loved the look of this one once it was finished and I was keen to ride it myself, so I'm really looking forward to feedback on this board.

Serena Brooke wins Bud Light Lime Surf Series

The Bud Light Lime Surf Series reached its final stop at Ventura's C-street and reveled in cold, fun south swell. Torrey Meister's packaged airs and big, open face moves on C-Street's high-performance walls won the final with a near perfect 19.02 heat score. A much needed performance due to drawing Nate Yeomans, Timmy Curran and Roy Powers in the final. Former ASP Women's World Tour surfer and Bud Light Lime Team member Serena Brooke hasn't lost her touch. The Australian used big floats and combos to take the women's division over Californian's Kyla Langen, Erica Hosseini and Jenna Balestar. Serena's current favourite board is a 5'10 modified X3 model. PLAYA DE PANTIN, Galicia - Spain (Tuesday, September 13, 2011) – The opening day of the ASP 5-Star Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro was greeted with a solid 6ft ground swell as Rounds One and Two were completed with many standout performances by the strong international field who revelled in the powerful conditions. Brent Savage (Cabarita, AUS) 20, performed a huge opening floater followed by a series of powerful snaps and rail carves to post a last minute victory by claiming an 8.67 out of 10, the single highest wave score of the event so far. Trailing behind the Fontaine brothers from France, Savage spotted his wave coming and went all out to secure it and his pass into the next round. “There is a lot of water moving out there and it was hard the whole heat. I had a 5 and a 3 and I struggled to get another score until about three minutes to go and I saw a big set coming and I said ‘I’m going to go this thing’ and the guy who was coming second gave it to me. I thought it was going to close out but it kept linking through and I got the score I needed.” Savage, a promising up-and-comer on the ASP Star tour, is gaining valuable experience on this his first visit to the ‘Old Continent’ and is hoping to improve on his results so far on the ASP European summer leg of events.

“It is my first time to Europe and my first time in Pantin so it is great. I have been making a few heats in each event but no big result so it would be good to make a final. I am taking it heat by heat and trying to focus on getting two good waves.” Brent, Perth and Wrenchy are all through to Round of 32 which continues tomorrow.

I had some free time on my hands the other day after finishing my boards off early, so grabbed the good half of an old damaged longboard blank, a few templates and fired up the planer for a bit of fun. I was looking for something along the lines of a mini-Simmons type design ( in forward outline, rocker and length) but wanted to mix it up with a different foil and tail setup, as well something that could run with fairly standard quad fin settings. I gave myself a bit of freedom to go where things took me and here's what came out the other end.
The soft egg rails run from a slightly rolled entry and belly into a deep double concave to spiral vee off the tail. The board is super short with a wide back end, so the spiral vee, the deep flyers and double bat wing tail will work well with the quad setup and give some different angles of attack on small mushier waves, still maintaing the flow when going rail to rail.
I dare say we'll be glassing this up for a fun test run and we'll see where it takes us. Sometimes you've just got to have a bit of fun...

Since I started making him boards 4 years ago he has impressed me with his artistic flair and his unique talent of coming up with fresh new sprays that look great in photos and videos. Heres a few shots of his latest efforts and some photos from Moliets in France where he is staying with his brother James waiting for the upcoming WQS event in Spain.

Its been a busy week at the factory completing all my customs and Japan boards for the next shipment, catching up on orders after a weeks holiday down in Sydney. I've also done myself a few of the new models to test out over the weekend - a 6'0 'Junk' model, a 6'0 'Burrito' prototype and a 5'10 'Vector'. The first two boards are grovel/small wave boards, the Burrito aimed at a bulkier surfer. The Vector is a twist on the popular P4. Stay tuned for more info on these over the coming months.
